Ticket Travel • Travel information

Spain and Europe entry rules for British travellers

Clear, current guidance on the EU Entry/Exit System (EES), the forthcoming ETIAS authorisation and what to check before you travel.

Information checked: 26 September 2026
Travelling soon? EES border checks are in operation. ETIAS has not launched and applications are not currently being accepted. Check the official advice again before departure, as the ETIAS launch timetable may change.

Two systems, two different steps

EES • In operation

Registration at the border

The Entry/Exit System records the border crossings of most non-EU visitors travelling for short stays. It began its progressive introduction on 12 October 2025 and became fully operational across the Schengen area on 10 April 2026.

  • You may be asked for a facial photograph and fingerprints when entering the Schengen area.
  • There is no application fee for EES registration.
  • You do not normally need to take any action before arriving at the border.
  • Allow extra time for immigration controls, particularly when travelling at busy periods.
ETIAS • Not yet operating

Authorisation before future trips

ETIAS is the separate online travel authorisation that will apply to visa-exempt visitors, including most British holidaymakers. ETIAS has not yet launched and applications are not currently being accepted. The EU says the specific start date will be announced before the system goes live.

  • Do not apply or pay anyone now: ETIAS applications are not currently open.
  • Once introduced, the ETIAS application fee will be €20, with exemptions for certain applicants.
  • An approved authorisation will generally be valid for up to three years, or until the linked passport expires, whichever comes first.
  • When applications open, use the official EU ETIAS website or app.

Before you travel to Spain

  1. Check your passport. For entry to Spain, it must have been issued less than 10 years before your arrival and remain valid for at least three months after you plan to leave the Schengen area.
  2. Count your Schengen days. British visitors can normally travel visa-free for up to 90 days in any rolling 180-day period across the Schengen area as a whole.
  3. Have supporting documents to hand. Spanish border officials may ask for your return or onward ticket, accommodation details and evidence relating to your visit.
  4. Prepare for EES checks. Follow the instructions at your airport, port or border crossing. You do not normally need to apply for EES before travelling.
  5. Allow additional time. EES checks can add time to immigration procedures on arrival and departure, particularly during busy travel periods.
  6. Check ETIAS before future journeys. ETIAS is not currently operating. Check the official EU website shortly before travelling for the latest launch information.

If you hold a valid residence permit or long-stay visa, or have another exempt status, different EES or ETIAS rules may apply. Carry proof of your status and check the official guidance for your circumstances. Work and stays exceeding the normal short-visit allowance have separate requirements.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need ETIAS for Spain today?

No. As at 26 September 2026, ETIAS is not operating and applications are not currently being accepted. Check the official EU information before a future departure.

Is EES a visa?

No. EES is a digital border system that records entry and exit information and, where applicable, biometric details. It does not replace the normal rules governing how long British visitors may remain in the Schengen area.

How long is my EES record valid?

GOV.UK currently advises that a digital EES record is valid for three years. You may still be required to provide biometric information when crossing the border.

What about Ireland and Cyprus?

Ireland and Cyprus are outside the Schengen area and EES does not apply when travelling to either country. ETIAS will have different country coverage, so always check the requirements for your particular destination.

What if I live in Spain or another Schengen country?

Long-term residents of a Schengen country are generally exempt from EES registration. Carry documentation proving your residence status and check the official guidance before travelling.

What is the UK ETA?

The UK's Electronic Travel Authorisation concerns eligible travellers entering the UK. It is separate from the EU's EES and ETIAS arrangements for travel to Europe.
